Buying at Chalkwell
Whether you're in the room or bidding live from Tokyo, the process is straightforward, transparent, and open to all.
How it works
Our full catalogue is published online ahead of each sale. Every lot includes condition notes, provenance where known, and an estimate range. No surprises.
Free registration via Auctionet. Provide basic ID documents once and you're set for every future sale. New buyers are welcome — our staff are happy to guide you through.
Attend in person at our Southend saleroom, bid live online via Auctionet, arrange a telephone bid, or leave a maximum commission bid and let the auctioneer bid on your behalf up to your limit.

There is nothing quite like attending a live sale. Our saleroom in Southend-on-Sea is open for viewing the day before and the morning of each auction. Arrive early, examine the lots in person, and bid in person on the day.
Sales typically begin at 10:00am. Viewing is free and no appointment is needed.

What is the buyer's premium?
A buyer's premium is added to the hammer price and forms part of the total purchase price. Chalkwell's current premium is 25% + VAT on the premium. So if a lot sells for £1,000, you pay £1,000 hammer + £250 premium + £50 VAT on the premium = £1,300 total. VAT is not charged on the hammer price itself for most lots.
Are there any online bidding surcharges?
No. Whether you bid in the saleroom, by telephone, or online through our bidding platforms, the same buyer's premium applies. There are no additional online bidding fees charged by Chalkwell.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept debit and credit cards, bank transfer (BACS/CHAPS), and cash up to £500. Payment is due within five working days of the sale. We do not accept PayPal or cryptocurrency.
Can I arrange delivery of my purchased items?
Yes. For the majority of lots, shipping can be arranged directly through Auctionet after the sale. Simply order and pay for delivery through the Auctionet website or app, and your purchase can be shipped to your home almost anywhere in the world. If shipping isn't available for a particular item, our team can recommend trusted local packing and courier services.
I'm new to auctions — can I still bid?
Absolutely. Our team is here to help first-time buyers. Come to a viewing, ask questions, and we'll walk you through the process. There is no pressure and no obligation until the hammer falls.
